We are FTC team #8367, ACME Robotics. We are comprised of ten members from grades 7-11 from various schools in the rural Nevada City/Grass Valley area. We operate privately and are completely independent of any school financially; we share our workspace with the high school Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) club.We compete through an international non-profit called FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology ) which administers robotics programs for children from K-12. We compete in the NorCal League of the FIRST Tech Challenge.
Our 2017-2018 Team
Ryan Brott CTO / Director of Software / Founder
Ryan has been on the team for four years and was one of the co-founders of the team. He is 17 years old and is a Senior at Nevada Union High School. He is the Software Team’s leader. His favorite part of being on the team is working on code for the robot. In his spare time, he enjoys computer programming and playing classical piano. His favorite school subjects are computer science and mathematics.
Kellen Bodine Director of Engineering / Driver / Cofounder
Kellen helped found the team four years ago and has been on the team ever since as the Chief Hardware Officer. He is 17 years old and attends Nevada Union High School as a Senior. His favorite part of being on the team is building the robot. He is an Eagle Scout and enjoys playing video games and outdoor activities such as skiing or biking. His favorite movies are the Bourne Movies. His favorite subject in school is engineering.
John Convis CAD Designer / Hardware Team
John has been on the team for three years after Kellen talked him into joining. John is 17 years old and attends Nevada Union High School as a Senior. He is interested in animation and computers and enjoys listening to music and playing video games. His favorite book is Ready Player One and his favorite movie is Treasure Planet. He enjoys mechanical engineering in school.
Clara Luisetti Software and Business Teams
Clara joined the team this year and is taking part in both Software and Business teams. She is 14 years old and is a freshman at Nevada Union High School. Her favorite part of being on the team is learning about Java. Her favorite pastimes are watching Food Network and crafting. She enjoys reading the Hunger Games and her favorite subjects in school are mathematics and science.
Oren Stallings Hardware Team
Oren is 16 years old and attends Nevada Union High School as a Junior. This is his first year on the team and he enjoys building with ACME’s fun individuals. He heard about the team from ACME’s presentation at the STEAM Expo. He loves swimming and playing water polo. His favorite TV series in the Office and his favorite subjects in school are math, science and history.
Emma Sheffo Software and Business Teams
Emma joined the team this year . She is 14 years old and is a Freshman at Forest Charter School. She enjoys reading Rick Riordan books and hanging out with her cats (preferably at the same time), as well as playing piano. Her favorite school subjects are science and English.
Ben Brott Hardware Team
Ben is 13 years old and attends Seven Hills School as a seventh grader. He just joined this year, but has been around the team ever since his brother, Ryan, co-founded it. He enjoys working on the robot’s mechanisms. He enjoys reading and his favorite series is Fablehaven. His favorite subject in school is mathematics.
Kelly Muir Software and Business Teams
Kelly is a Junior at Nevada Union High School and is 16 years old. Kelly has been a part the team for 2 years. Kelly heard about the team from Kellen and Ryan and enjoys working on interesting and large projects. Kelly participates in his school’s debate team. His favorite book is The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. His favorite subjects in school are mathematics and engineering.
Sean Giomi Hardware Team
Sean joined the team after participating in the Lego Robotics Camp that ACME held over the summer. He is 13 years old and attends Union Hill School as an eighth grader. He enjoys working on the robot and having fun with his teammates. Sean loves to play soccer and enjoys watching YouTube. His favorite series is Magnus Chase by Rick Riordan and enjoys science and mathematics in school.
Shawn Rashby Hardware Team / Driver
Shawn is 15 years old and attends Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning as a Freshman. He heard about ACME from another fellow member, Kellen. His favorite part of being on the team is building the robot. He has a cat and loves to play outside. His favorite subject in school is science.
Mike Oitzman Mentor
Mike has been a mentor ever since the team started four years ago. His favorite part of being a Mentor is watching ideas develop and seeing team members learn and grow. He is a management consultant at Market Spec. He also started the first FLL team in Nevada County six years ago. Mike enjoys photography and his favorite movie series is Star Wars.
Michael Lewis Mentor
Michael has been a Mentor for our team for three years. He heard about the team from a newspaper article about a fundraiser the team had did. His favorite part of being on the team is seeing the team members learn and grow. He is an Electrical Engineer at Gyro-Stabilized System. He loves to be outside and spends his free time mountain biking, mountaineering, rock climbing and backpacking.
Stephanie Lewis Mentor
Stephanie has been a mentor for the past two years after her husband, Michael, became one. Her favorite part of being a mentor is getting to know the members and watching them thrive and find success. She is a Software Engineer at Telestream and enjoys crocheting, reading, and spoiling her nieces and nephews. She knows every single line from the musical, Hamilton, and her favorite books are Harry Potter and The Martian.
Josh Smith Mentor
Josh is a new mentor this year. He is a mechanical engineer at Autometrix, Inc. and joined as a mentor after learning about the team when ACME did a demonstration and presentation at his work. He enjoys mountain biking and also help coach the Nevada Union High School mountain biking team. He has a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Ron Shaffer Mentor
Ron is a new mentor to ACME Robotics this year. He was previously a mentor with a FIRST FRC team (#4470) for 3 years. His favorite part of mentoring is observing the young engineers as they create their robots, and subsequently competing in the exciting FIRST competitions. He is now retired, but spent the past 40 years in the construction industry as a mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems specialist. He has helped build two rocket launch complexes, multiple hospitals and college science labs, and two US Embassies [one in South Africa and one in Berlin Germany].He has spent his entire adult life working with youth groups. He was a scoutmaster with the same boy scout troop for 21 consecutive years; and spent two years living in Mexico helping build a tech school for homeless boys. He has been scuba diving since his teens, and has backpacked at least 1700 miles through the Sierras in his time. He is also an ultra-light aircraft pilot.
